UEFA Cup Preview: Kayserispor - PSG What: UEFA Cup Round One, First Leg Who: Kayserispor vs. Paris Saint-Germain When: Thursday September 18th, 20:00 (CET) Where: Kayseri Atatürk, Kayseri ![]() Anatolian Stars Lack Sparkle Kayserispor are making their third venture into the UEFA Cup this season but are aiming to qualify for the competition’s group stages for the first time. The Kayseri side club qualified for the competition by virtue of winning the Turkish Cup while finishing as the fifth placed side in the Süper Lig for the third season running. Historically, the Anatolian Stars have achieved little of note until their recent successes. Season 2008/09 will only be their fourth after promotion from Turkey’s second flight, yet, they have achieved qualification for Europe in three of these seasons. Names recognised in the football world are, for the first time joining the club. Both Julius Agahowa and Salomen Olembe, who had difficult spells in the English Premier League with Wigan, yet are respected and experienced talents, were among a number of players to join the club this summer. Star midfielder and captain, Mehmet Topuz, was retained in the summer months despite increasing speculation over his future but the versatile midfielder remains in Kayseri for the time being. News has not always been good over the summer months as prolific striker Görkan Ünal elected to join Trabzonspor, depriving his old club of his goal scoring talents, which amounted to six goals in eight games during their 2005/06 European run. Despite the acquisition of Montenegrin forward, Milan Purović, and young Turkish hitman, Tevfik Köse, from Sporting Lisbon and Bayern Leverkusen respectively in the summer, goals have been hard to come by in the early weeks of the Süper Lig. Indeed, Kayserispor have only managed one goal in three matches but have yet to concede, indicating perfectly where their relative strengths and weaknesses lie. Success a rapid ascent to the top of the domestic game on the pitch has been matched by activity off the field. Kayserispor are set to move into a brand new 33,000 all-seater stadium, Kayseri Yeni Stadyumu, which is due to open in December of this year. As a result, Thursday’s fixture against PSG could well be the last match played in the 40 year-old Kayseri Atatürk Stadium. Paris Enjoying Mini-Renaissance A turgid campaign last term, somehow, lead to PSG muddling their way through to both the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue finals. Paul Le Guen’s side, who teetered on the very brink of relegation for much of the season, claimed the Coupe de la Ligue with victory over Lens (2-1) but could not stop Olympique Lyon claiming their first Coupe de France win since the 1960s. It was a season far more bitter than sweet at the Parc des Princes. Yet Paul Le Guen received only support from his board and, together with club president, Charles Villeneuve, and head of recruitment, Alain Roche, have set about building a side capable of challenging for a European berth by virtue of their final league placing in this season’s Championnat. Claude Makélélé, a household name because of his exploits with Real Madrid, Chelsea and France, was enticed to the French capital in the summer while Serbian striker Mateja Kezman, who will know a great deal about Kayserispor having played with Fenerbahçe last season, was a later arrival. Although this pairing are arguably the highest profile names to be lured to Paris, the addition of veteran French winger Ludovic Giuly and dynamic, young midfielder Stéphane Sessegnon, have added verve but also tenacity to PSG’s first eleven. Guillaume Hoarau, a 24 year-old forward who was previously prolific in Ligue 2, has also been added to the club and has made a significant difference to their offensive production already, although PSG could hardly be considered free-scoring after managing only four goals in their opening five matches. Yet weaknesses remain. PSG’s rearguard has shown itself to be fallible in the early stages of the season, with only the back-to-form Mickael Landreau in goal preventing it from conceding far more than the two league goals that have been leaked. Le Guen’s desire for another defender is well recognised but it is likely he will wait until January before making a purchase. Definitely missing are midfielder Fatih Ceylan, who has yet to feature this season, and centre-back Aydin Toscali. Doubts persist over several players. Purović and Basdag, who would both expect to be in the starting eleven, are considered touch-and-go while Koray Colgecen is unlikely to feature as he is still recovering from a back operation. Saloman Olembe has a minor knock but should be fine to play. Possible starting XI: Hamidou; Nalbantoglu, Tosca, Ali Turan, Bayram; Saidou; Mehmet Topuz, Olembe, Ragip, Agahowa; Purović PSG To date this season, Paul Le Guen has been rather fortunate with regard to injury and suspension problems. Two players who will sit out due to knocks are young central defender Mamdou Sakho and midfielder Clément Chantôme, who has previously courted interest from Arsenal. Zoumana Camara will serve a suspension earned several seasons ago in the Intertoto Cup but Claude Makélélé will return to the starting eleven after serving a one match ban in Ligue 1. Le Guen may choose to rotate his squad a little, leaving out the industrious Giuly in favour of Pancrate. Possible starting XI: Landreau; Ceara, Armand, Traoré, Bourillon; Makélélé, Sessegnon, Rothen, Pancrate; Hoarau, Kezman PLAYERS TO WATCH Kayserispor Although the Anatolian Stars have worked hard at bringing in recognised talent in the summer, it is their captain, Mehmet Topuz, who is the real mainstay of their side. The club turned down offers from some of Turkey’s biggest clubs in the summer while Valencia were also linked with a move for the 25 year-old. Capable of playing anywhere across the middle of the field, in addition to slotting in at right-back on occasion, the midfielder will have to overcome the challenge of PSG’s powerhouse central pairing if his side are to have much success. PSG Claude Makélélé’s signature may have caught many of the headlines in the summer but, to date, the future French legend has been upstaged by Benin’s rising star Stéphane Sessegnon, who will likely make his European debut on Thursday. A dynamic and effervescent midfielder, Sessegnon is an athletic player capable of attacking and defending with equal ferocity. PREDICTION Given the goal scoring records of each of these sides early in the season, coupled with their strong defensive histories, it is impossible to predict a goal-fest. Kayserispor will have home advantage and shall be willed on by a buoyant home support but PSG’s players are technically superior. It’s difficult to see much separating these sides. Kayserispor 0-1 PSG
