Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has denied rumours that Rangers striker Kris Boyd could be on his way to join the Tynesisde club.
There had been speculation the SPL’s top scorer, who is available on a Bosman, could be the newly promoted Premiership club’s first summer signing after his decision to quit Ibrox.
But now it looks like boyhood Newcastle fan Boyd will be plying his trade elsewhere with Hughton more focused on persuading Chelsea target, star striker Andy Carroll, to remain at the club than taking the Rangers hitman south.
Newcastle have been linked with moves for Celtic signing targets Sol Campbell and Jimmy Bullard, as well as Bolton Wanderers defender Andy O’Brien.
But speaking about a possible move for Scotland international Boyd,. Hughton told The Newcastle Chronicle: “Kris Boyd is a good player, but I can categorically say that there have been no talks at this stage.
“There has been no correspondence and no communication. You never want to say 100% no, but it’s a non-starter at this moment.”

Turkish side Kayserispor last night vowed not to give up on Kris Boyd - because the Rangers striker is their top summer transfer target.
The hitman has decided to leave Ibrox when his deal runs out at the end of this month.
And Kayserispor - managed by former Rangers star Shota Arveladze - have revealed they're still locked in negotiations with Boyd.
Dates said: "Our priority signing target is Kris Boyd. But has when you try to sign big players it takes a great deal of time to get the right arrangements and conclude the negotiations.
"Often you have to work in negotiations for months.
"What I can promise is that we will begin the new season with a stronger team on the field than last season."
Boyd has been linked with a string of clubs including Birmingham and Newcastle.

Kris Boyd is on the verge of signing a deal with Turkish side Kayserispor.

The out-of-contract striker has informed Rangers he wouldn’t be taking up their offer of a new contract.
Now it seems likely he will snub offers from England to join the Turkish outfit, who are managed by former Ibrox star Shota Arveladze.
Boyd is expected to earn around £50,000 a week by signing for Kayserispor, and the deal could be completed by the end of next week.
General manager Suleyman Dates confirmed his side in negotiations with Boyd.
He said: “Right now, our priority signing target is Kris Boyd.
“When you try to sign big players, it takes a great deal of time to get the right arrangements then conclude the negotiations.
“Often you have to work on negotiations for months.
“What I certainly can promise is we will begin the new season with a stronger team on the field than last season.”
Boyd has been linked with a string of clubs in England and Alex McLeish, the man who signed him for Rangers from Kilmarnock,
was keen to lure him to the English Premier League.
Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is an admirer but says they haven’t even had a chance to get around the negotiating table as yet.
He said: “Kris Boyd is a good player, but I can say there have been no talks at this stage. It’s a non-starter just now.”
Meanwhile, Kirk Broadfoot has been offered a big-money deal to sign for Portsmouth.
The out-of-contract Gers defender is thought to be ready to commit his future to Pompy although Blackpool remain in the frame.
